The museum, approx. 450 m² exhibition area, is housed on the ground floor and the 1st floor in a building of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University. The permanent exhibitions "Earth's Crust and its Changes" and "Mineral Resources of the World" explain how the Earth functions: sedimentation, how mountains are formed, volcanoes and plate tectonics, but also the origins of mineral resources. The section "Rocky History of Bavaria" takes the visitor on a journey through millions of years of Bavarian Earth history. Visitors can study and grasp stones kept in open drawers. A special exhibition deals with the spectacular geology of Iceland located on the mid-Atlantic divergent boundary of the North American and the Eurasian tectonic plates. Another division is devoted to the geology of building stones exemplified by polished tiles in the floor. A newly acquired huge polished slab of "Untersberger Marmor" representing the first erosional debris of the Alps, is shown in geological details. This limestone is a very famous colourful rock from the Salzburg region widely used in public buildings all over Europe including Munich (e.g. Glyptothek, Propyläen, Alte Pinakothek).

Geological Highlights from Iceland
01.01.2012 - 31.03.2018

Iceland is the largest volcanic island on Earth. Continuing tectonic, volcanic and geothermal activity are ideal prerequisites for research of geological processes. On occasion of the Eyjafiallajökull eruption in 2010, a special exhibition in the Geological Museum was set up to show results of more than 20 years of Munich based research led by Dr. Ulrich Münzer (University of Munich).
