The Alpine Museum brings the peaks to the big city. The collection and special exhibits display the topics related to the mountain world – climbing, Alpine science and the society. Paintings and graphic works from Dürer to the present time reflect the fascination and reverence for the Alps through the past centuries. Historical documents, photographs, and varied equipment describe the scientific exploration of the mountains with its elements of tourism and sports.
The special exhibits alternate annually to provide topical and cultural-historical themes related to the Alps, i.e. (such as) the history of the Alpine Society, the artistic and scientific research into the mountain world and climate change. Smaller studio displays feature the works of individuals or project groups. Lectures, tours, and a learning program for children and adults enlighten the content.  People wishing more detailed research on the Alpine topics are encouraged to visit the library and the archive of the German Alpine Society. The café pleasantly situated on the island between both Isar River branches offers relaxation.

The Alpine Museum boasts a history of over 100 years: in 1907 the German and Austrian Alpine Societies agreed to establish the museum. Since many historical artifacts still rest in the Alpine Museum in Innsbruck, a new collection developed in Munich and has been open to the public since 1993.
