Its holdings of more than 50,000 drawings and 350,000 prints cover every period from the 13th century to the present day. Special focuses are the single leaf woodcuts and engravings of the 15th century, early German drawings and prints of the Dürer period, Italian Renaissance drawings, and Netherlandish prints of the 16th and 17th centuries. The highlights also include German drawings of the Baroque period and the 19th century, especially from the artists circle patronized by King Ludwig I of Bavaria, and the renowned holdings of German art of the second half of the 19th century. Key examples of Classical Modernism and major works by international artists and printmakers from the postwar period to the present day form an emphasis of recent acquisition policy, resulting in important holdings of contemporary art that bolster the museum's international reputation.

The origins of the collection go back to 1758, when the Cabinet of Engravings and Drawings was founded at Mannheim Castle by Prince Elector Carl Theodor of the Palatinate. The collection moved to Munich shortly before the year 1800. Its holdings experienced a considerable expansion during the period of secularization.
The study room and depots of the Graphische Sammlung are located at Katharina-von-Bora-Strasse 10. Changing exhibitions are held in its spaces at the Pinakothek der Moderne on Barer Strasse 40.

Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München / Pinakothek der Moderne
Thea Djordjadze
19.10.2017 - 14.01.2018

The young Georgian artist Thea Djordjadze (b. 1971) has attracted much attention in the international art scene in recent years with her subtle site-specific installations. She will realize an installation in the galleries of the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich that will set selected prints from the collection in dialogue with her sculptural objects, marking a first in her career. This allows her to open new spaces for viewers to take up varied viewpoints and fresh perspectives on classic works on paper.
