175th anniversary

Palaeontology and Geology Through the Ages.
175th anniversary of the Bavarian State Collection of Palaeontology and Geology
until March 31, 2019

Paläontologisches Museum München

Bavarian fossils and rocks, bones and skeletons, as well as microscopic organisms from all continents of our planet – who isn’t mesmerized with the silent remains of the animals and plants of the distant past and the ubiquitous traces of the Geologic periods of time?

The Bavarian State Collection of Palaeontology and Geology (BSPG), part of the Bavarian Natural History Collections (SNSB), holds more than 2.5 million objects and, therewith, is one of the largest collections of palaeontological and geological objects in Germany. Among these objects are numerous treasures from expeditions and 19th and early 20th century natural history exploration travels to Egypt, Libya, Namibia, South Africa, as well as Pakistan and Antarctica, to name a few.

Discover with us foreign countries and far-away places – embark with us on a journey into the past. Dinosaurs, fishes, plants, insects and other invertebrate animals, or modest “rocks” – the spoil gathered by the palaeontologists, geologists, and natural scientists during their travels was often tremendous and valuable, but adventurous and painstaking were many of the paths travelled to transport the yield. But royal bestowals, famous pieces (e.g., Archaeopteryx), complete collections assembled by renowned scientists of the day, and material from own excavation campaigns also found the way to Munich during the last centuries.

On the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the foundation of the Bavarian State Collection of Palaeontology and Geology and the official introduction of palaeontology and geology as university subjects at Munich, the special exhibition “Palaeontology and Geology Through the Ages” of the Palaeontological Museum Munich presents witnesses of the past collected in several centuries. Glimpses into the innovative research of present-day palaeontology, geology, and geobiology round out the exhibition.

Explore with us the past and present – join us for a stroll through the history of palaeontology and geology at Munich!
